AI art - with ChatGPT

I was wondering if it was possible to use ChatGPT (a language model) to make art. I prompted it by asking "Please create an SVG document depicting a representation of the moon" at first it told me that it wasn't able to create images because it is a text-based model. However - after a few tries it generated the following:

I then asked it to add some craters and it did quite a good job.

Please add craters

I then asked it to make the moon colour more accurate.

Make it less saturated and more grey/rock colored.

It wasn't really able to replicate the contrast on the edges of the craters though.

Please add a gradient to the crater so it looks more like the shadow coming over the edge

I asked it to do the Earth - oh, not so good.

Make an SVG for the earth

I then gave it a bit more info about the Earth.

The earth is circular with greenish blobs (land)

I was very disappointed with the sun - why is there a face?

Please make the sun

I asked it to model the solar system

Model the solar system (not to scale)

It didn't miss any planets but there are some overlapping.

In conclusion - this is an... interesting way of creating art - however it does look like someone tried to make art in MS PowerPoint.

ARTICLE RETRACTED (2025-06-14): I was previously unaware of the implications regarding emergency calls. Although what I say below is not incorrect I no longer hold the opinion that the telcos should plough straight ahead. My response: The 3G shutdown is something that you should want and it's not just a cost-saving measure for the telcos. Firstly, a degradation of coverage is a terrible thing, that should be rectified by upgrading the 4G and 5G coverage, not keeping on 3G on. I fully support government support into ensuring that everyone who relies on it has coverage. As for people with older phones, unfortunately they do need to upgrade, the phones are expected to have a fixed lifespan and basically all phones produced within the last 4 years support VoLTE calling (which is needed to make calls without the 3G network), that's not to say that those manufactured before that don't have it as it can easily be added with a software update.
